Organising and running open space (aka unconference) events
Duane Raymond, FairSay
Open space events are one of the most powerful ways for people to learn together because they are participant led. Yet they are still rare in the sector and beyond: most events are one-way lectures with pre-programmed topics. 18 years of ECF events has started to change that, but in this session you'll learn how to plan, organise and run an open space yourself.
Open space isn't simply about letting the participants set the agenda. There are some even more important design principles and practices behind getting the right people in the room in the first place and having a clear purpose. You also need to consider the right spaces and ensure you have enough time. Duane will take you through these design principles and practices in an interactive way and facilitate a discussion about your concerns including things like trusting participants, trusting the process, and letting go of control.
