Lots of interest at ECF08...
There was lots of interest in the idea of a Campaigning 'Cool Tool Pool' at ECF08, but we had only a little time to explore the possibilities. Now it is time to start working through the issues and details.
At ECF08 a large group of us revived this idea and started talking about it. Some of the issues that came out were:
- How it needs to be 'lead' by a project manager if it is to go beyond the concept / talking stage - and most likely a freelancer (given the burden on NGO staff)
- Using free services like Google (e.g. Google Maps) and Yahoo (e.g. Flickr, Pipes) is good for having a fast turnaround, but has ethical considerations associated with the activities of these organisations.
- We need to develop a shortlist of applications all pool 'members' agree on so that each will get the benefit of the pooled tools.
- Any other points I missed?

The Tool Pool is now open
The Campaigning Tool Pool has been talked about at the eCampaigning Forum event at least as early as 2006...so it is about time we took the next step and started discussing making it happen!
Calling all co-conspirators to try something radical: work together to openly discuss our visions for new campaigning tools, prioritise those we would like to see happen and then invest budget and effort in making them happen.
We've dreamt of it long enough so it is time to start talking about making it happen and then we'll go from there.
So join the Tool Pool email list and let's see if we can create some amazing campaigning tools together.
Duane (and with a small push from Eoin at GPI and for Karina at OGB being open to the idea)
